Google offers much more than a search engine. Google has over two dozen other products, including Gmail, a free web-based email application. Setting up a Gmail account for yourself is Thing #1.
In the 23 Things program, we are going to explore and use Google products like Google Reader, Google Docs, and iGoogle. The first step to using these products is setting up a Google account.
Your new Gmail account user name and password will serve as your Google account and allow you to access the other Google products more easily. You will use this same username and password in later Things.
You will also use this email address to register for the 23 Things program and receive 23 Things email updates.
