What is the 23 Things Program?
The 23 Things is an online learning program that encourages you to learn about emerging technologies that are changing the way we access and share information, and the way we communicate.
How Does It Work?
Every week, through this blog, you will be introduced to one or two new “Things”. “Things” can be tools, technologies, websites, even ideas. For each “Thing”, there will be an at least one discovery exercise for you to complete.
Who Can Participate?
This program is open to all Brevard County Libraries staff.
Why Do This?
This is a great chance to further your personal and professional development with hands-on learning about new trends and technology. It’s an opportunity to explore and discover.
Plus, if you complete all 23 Things by May 27, 2011, you will receive an incentive prize and your name will be placed in a random drawing for one of three special prizes.
Did You Say Prizes?
Yes! The Brevard Library Foundation has generously donated prizes: all staff members who complete the program by May 27, 2011 will receive a customized 1GB flash drive! And, their name will be placed in a random drawing for a chance to win one of three special prizes: a Dell Mini Netbook, a Kindle, or an iPod shuffle.
We are very grateful to the Brevard Library Foundation for its support of this staff training initiative.
How Long Do I Have To Complete The Program?
23 Things begins October 1, 2010 and ends May 27, 2011. In order to be eligible for the incentive prize and the prize drawings, you must complete the 23 Things by May 27, 2011.
How Do I Know Which Things To Do and When?
Each week, this 23 Things blog will be updated with specific instructions about the discovery exercises for that week. The discovery exercises are designed to allow the participants to focus each week on a different area without feeling overwhelmed.
What If I Miss a Week?
If you don't finish (or even start) a "Thing" in the week that it is posted, the Thing will stay on the blog, and you can access the information needed to complete the Thing at any time. Just remember: you must complete all 23 Things by May 27, 2011 to be eligible for an incentive prize and special prize drawing.
How Do I Track My Progress For Each Of The 23 Things?
For each Thing, you will need to complete at least one discovery exercise and record your progress in a specific way. Just be sure to follow all the instructions for each Thing. A checklist of all 23 Things is available on Sharepoint, in the 23 Things tab.
What If I Already Know This Stuff?
Our staff members have different skill levels. Even if you already know how to use some of these tools, you are encouraged to participate. You may learn something new and can serve as a resource for your fellow staff members.
What If I Need Help?
Most of the Things will include tips, but many you will be able to do without instruction or help. But we do encourage you to seek help when you are stuck.
You can:
• Read the Getting Started section
• ask co-workers, friends, family, teenagers!
• buddy up with another participant
• email Training Coordinator Susan Szymula at 23things@brev.org
